Last week I visited Bridget Riley’s exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre.
This is the largest exhibition of Riley’s work to date, a retrospective of pieces spanning a 70-year career, including during her time as a student at Goldsmiths.
Her black and white optical pieces from the early 1960s are truly captivating, and with later introductions of colour canvases and wall paintings there was such rich variety. It was fascinating to see preparatory drawings included alongside finished pieces.
With my background as a fine artist, I am always particularly excited by the chance to celebrate the contributions made by female artists. This exhibition recognises what is truly a life-time’s work from one of Britain’s most talented artists.
