This marks the first post in a new, short series I am undertaking on the emerging fashion cities that are rising to global prominence. The four mighty pillars of the fashion industry – Paris, Milan, London and New York, have long been considered the fashion capitals of the world. However, a number of cities across the world are presenting some increasingly-promising competition. Here I take a look at who the challengers are and how they are achieving their fame…
Whereas in the past, fashion has often been associated with excess and opulence, the modern look is all about minimal, clean, sophisticated design – something that the Scandinavian countries have excelled at.
The fashion press have flocked to these countries to shoot the local street style, as more of us desire to emulate this ‘modern’ look.
Copenhagen has fast become one of the most popular street style locations for photographers and bloggers, hoping to get a glimpse of the locals showcasing their muted colour pallet and practical elegance.

The Danish capital’s standing as an emerging fashion city, can’t be ascribed solely to their aesthetic though.
The emergence of a number of designers influencing fashion on a global level, such as Malene Birger and Ivan Grundahl, have helped to put Danish fashion firmly on the map.
The Danes have also grasped two fast-growing areas of fashion: menswear and sportswear. Homegrown menswear labels include the likes of Norse Projects, Wood Wood, RAINS, Elka Regntoj and Won Hundred.
Their focus on bike culture, trainers, and simple, yet smart sportswear has met the needs of a generation who want stylish comfort and clean casuals.
I have also noticed a real buzz about the Copenhagen Fashion Week (CFW), principally because of its unique and modern focus on sustainability, but also its impressive scale.
By combining the catwalk shows with huge trade fairs, that see over 2,700 brands represented and buyers from the likes of Selfridges and Liberty, the CFW is definitely the biggest fashion event in Scandinavia.
With its effortless glamour, modern focus and huge fashion week, Copenhagen one of the most exciting, emerging fashion cities.
