This month Elle magazine printed their first ever sustainable magazine, made from 100% recycled paper. The groundbreaking issue addresses how the fashion industry and consumers can make meaningful changes to the way they work and shop to help the environment. Teaming up with industry leaders such as Naomi Klein, Pamela Anderson, Stella McCartney, Arizona Muse, Livia Firth, Katherine Hamnett, Jaden Smith, Pandora Sykes and Slick Woods Elle have proposed a manifesto of sorts – a collection of easy but meaningful changes that all of you can adopt to help make ethical consuming part of your every day.
LCF students feature in the September issue with myself as ‘The Faces Of Fashion’s Sustainable Future’. I am incredibly proud of the sustainbility work we produce at LCF and I champion the work and ideas of our new generation of students. This issue supports the cause for better environmental consciousness, and I believe in education we play a huge role in helping teach others of the impact fashion plays on the environment. We need to start from the ground up, teaching students how to create clothing and build a business that operates within these boundaries. I encourage LCF students to remember the people behind the garments.
We’ve woken up to the issue of having an emotional connection with clothes. Already, there are more people in the world in slavery than when it was repealed 2OO years ago. Sustainability is about considering plastic, water, pesticides, pollution and the energy it takes to transport those materials. But it’s also about the people making the clothes. We shouldn’t want to put something on that somebody has suffered making.
